Life in Ancient Greece
Written by Gage Tooke:
What life was like for men was men would usually be training in the military or talking about politics, but when they weren't doing that, they went to the theatre for entertainment. The main themes for the theatre were tragedies and comedies. It is said that women were not allowed to watch theatre or perform at the theatre. The life of a woman in ancient Greece was mainly domestic house work and were not involved in public life or politics. Children in ancient Greece usually spent their time playing with toys and games.
People in ancient Greece mainly made a living by farming and often had land outside the city to provide their income, but the landscape and climate was difficult to farm. Grapes, olives, and grain were the major agricultural resources in ancient Greece. Grapes were picked in September and made into wine or eaten. Olives were hand picked or knocked out of the trees by wooden sticks then crushed in a press to produce olive oil or be eaten. Olive oil was a important product for many reasons including: cooking, lighting, beauty products, and athletic purposes. Grain would usually harvest around October to ensure it would grow during the wettest season. After the grain was harvested, it was then thrashed, using mules and the help of the wind to separate the chaff of the grain, the husks were then removed by pounding the grain with a pestle and mortar. Ancient Greeks usually ate bread and porridge, along with cheese, vegetables, fish, eggs and fruit. Animals such as deer, boar, and hare were hunted for food.
Greek boys would play games like hockey(not in the Olympic Games though) and they would usually play naked so girls were forbidden to watch. Greek girls were not expected to do much physical activity for recreation purposes. The Ancient Greeks also played games like marbles, dice, checkers and knucklebones.
